Hylton Presents:

The Tschaikowski St. Petersburg State Orchestra

  • February 8, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Merchant Hall

Roman Leontiev, conductor
Alexandre Pirojenko, piano

Since its founding shortly after World War II, this grand orchestra has developed an extremely diverse repertoire ranging from Baroque through 20th Century music. Their moving performances often include compositions by Vivaldi, Bach, and Handel, as well as Stravinsky and Poulenc—and, of course, works by the great Russian composers Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Tchaikovsky. The orchestra also regularly commissions and performs new works each season. Under the direction of music director and chief conductor Roman Leontiev, The Tschaikowski St. Petersburg State Orchestra performs an exciting program, featuring Wagner’s Overture from Der fliegende Höllander (The Flying Dutchmen), Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major, Op. 100, and Chopin’s Concerto No. 2 in F Minor, Op. 21 with internationally celebrated pianist Alexandre Pirojenko.

Hylton Presents:

Dr. Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys

  • February 11, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Merchant Hall Family Friendly Event

“Hard, starkly beautiful music,” says Newsweek about this living legend from rural southwest Virginia. For more than 60 years, bluegrass banjoist Dr. Ralph Stanley has continued to preserve traditional bluegrass, old-time and mountain music with his celebrated band, The Clinch Mountain Boys, which he formed with his brother Carter in 1946. Not content to rest on his laurels, at age 84, Stanley still tours with the vigor and elan of a rock star, performing more than 150 concerts each year. In the last decade, he became the first artist inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in the 21st century; earned a Grammy Award for his work on the soundtrack for the acclaimed film, “O Brother, Where Are Thou?”; received the National Medal of the Arts; and opened the Ralph Stanley Museum and Traditional Mountain Music Centre in Clintwood, Virginia. Most recently, his 2011 album “A Mother’s Prayer” was Grammy-nominated for Best Bluegrass Album (Listen to music from Dr. Stanley's Grammy-Nominated album here). Don’t miss this incredible night of music that will enchant bluegrass fans across generations! “One of the last, and surely the purest, of the traditional country musicians.” (The New York Times)
